Why does screen time disrupt sleep?
You may have heard that screen time (television, computers and even smartphones) can disrupt sleep, but do you know why? Scientists weren’t entirely sure until a team at the Salk recently discovered that as retinal cells process ambient light, they reset the sleep-wake rhythm. Exposing certain retinal cells to artificial light late into the night, researchers explain in Cell Reports, confuses the body’s internal clock and contributes to a host of health issues. Message: limit your use of late-night devices, especially if you’re having trouble sleeping through the night.
